At A Glance
Glenn's Urologic Surgery is a comprehensive but concise textbook focused on surgical procedures. After more than 30 years it is still required reading for most urology residents and is consulted by practicing physicians while planning surgeries. Chapters are heavily illustrated and progress from diagnosis to indications for surgery, to brief sections on alternative therapies, and then to detailed sections on surgical technique before closing with a discussion of outcomes as found in the literature. The Seventh Edition continues to emphasize laparoscopic procedures. Each section opens with a thoroughly illustrated description of relevant anatomy. Includes access code for web site with additional resources. |

Description
| The 10 sections and 139 chapters in this seventh edition of a classic and well-known urologic surgical book are written by top urology experts. Some sections deal with a particular organ system, while others are devoted to specific topics, such as pediatrics and laparoscopy. Black-and-white drawings and photos complement most chapters. |
Purpose
| The intent is to provide a comprehensive textbook of urological surgery covering open, laparoscopic, and some limited endoscopic procedures. The book describes and critiques different surgical techniques, while providing an overview of indications, patient preparation for surgery, and complications. |
Audience
| The chapters, illustrations, and online features add up to an excellent resource for practicing urologists who wish to refresh their knowledge of a particular procedure. The book also is an extremely valuable resource for residents in training. |
Features
| The first six chapters cover surgery for various organ systems in the genitourinary tract. The last four chapters are dedicated to urinary diversion, pediatric urology, laparoscopy, and new frontiers in urology. The historic core of the book describes open surgical procedures well. The chapter on laparoscopic surgery presents an extensive overview of all laparoscopic procedures with excellent illustrations. Practical robotics are included for the more common procedures. The illustrations are self explanatory and enhance the educational experience. The main shortcoming is the absence of a section on endourology and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. Online access to the entire text, along with other enhancements, come with the book. |
Assessment
| This well-written book is an excellent resource for both practicing urologists and urologists in training. Providing some of the surgical illustrations in true color should be considered for future editions. The expansion of laparoscopic and robotic surgery in recent years and the expansion of the types of procedures performed make this update particularly useful. |
